From
Reykjavik, we traveled to
Denmark, where we stayed at the
Hotel Mermaid in
Copenhagen. We were
a few blocks from the
Stroget
, which
is considered the longest pedestrian walkway in any major European city. We
spent a lot of time in this area shopping (yes, the bondage
Barbie's were in the window of a major
department store)
, avoided
the traffic jam of bicycles
, hung
out
and
checked out at some cool artwork
.
Walking around the city, we found the typical things you find in most European
cities like churches
,
statues
and
parliament buildings
.
Copenhagen has some really cool design aspects, like random gardens in front of
the Royal Library
and
really trendy office space in front of some really old buildings
. During
our walks around the city, we ran into
Christiania which is an experimental and self sustaining village within the
city limits.
Within
Christiania, you'll find some really interesting houses
and some
good food.
While in Denmark, we took an
excursion to Kronborg Slot, the
Castle
which
was the setting for Shakespeare's
Hamlet.
This very old castle (1500's) is pretty cool as it has a major tower
, a
chapel
, a
creepy dungeon (known as the
casemates), an
extravagant ballroom
and
interesting artwork
.
Walking outside the castle, we found another statue
and a
very loud colored lighthouse
. Oh,
what would you like to order at this cafe?
On the last day of the trip, we
headed to Tivoli Gardens
, a
famous amusement park in the middle of Copenhagen. Walking around the park
,
we took a few fun pictures
before
it rained. While it was raining, we went on the cheesy
Hans Christian Anderson story ride (video
1, video 2) and spent a few minutes in a
funhouse (video).
Overall, we had a great time in Copenhagen, but it was just a little bit too long. It will be a while before I head there again.
